How to vet an electrician
- Verify the C-10 electrical license on the CSLB website.
- Confirm the electrician is state-certified (California requires certified electricians for C-10 contractors).
- Confirm insurance, and workers’ comp for crews.
- Ask about permits — panel and service work require them.
- Check recent references and reviews.
California licensing for electricians
Electrical work in California is a Class C-10 specialty license, required for any job worth $1,000 or more. California also certifies individual electricians, so the person doing the work — not just the company — should be certified.
A written contract is required over $500, and the down payment is capped at $1,000 or 10%, whichever is less. Verify on the CSLB website.
